BI NOSTALGIA, aka Luca Rigato, along with with David E.H. formed the nucleus of ENDLESS NOSTALGIA, a cult band of the Italian electronic post-punk scene, active between 1982 and 1992.

Since 1985, BI NOSTALGIA also began tracing a solo path, alternating various projects with songs and pure instrumental works, exclusively released on cassette.

Between 2016 and 2018, the cassette recordings were reissued by Silentes/re-TLOTG, accompanied by the original graphics and bonus tracks. The latest album released in 2019 (available on CD) is "The King in Yellow," inspired by Richard Chambers' short stories.

While working on one of his releases, exactly during the recording of the cassette "ART is NOT Much" (TLOTG), BI NOSTALGIA asked FIORI CARONES ALBERTO a contribution for this four-handed collaboration. In 1988 (...it seems like prehistory but that's how it was...), the only way to share a collaboration without meeting in person was to "physically send" a cassette by mail.

Alberto recorded and mailed to Luca a short piano piece which, once completed, was transferref onto a c12 Endless TDK Tape cassette. Using another similar cassette, BI NOSTALGIA recorded a second keyboard part with the addition of two loops. To finish the work he played the two cassettes in sync, finally mixing them on tape. He recorded one version for "ART is NOT Much," later allocating a second version as a bonus track on the "Cathedrals EP" cassette.

Today, with the aim of reviving the spirit of long-distance collaborations and with the help and support of Stefano Gentile, two artists selected by Luca, DEISON and FABIO ORSI, have been involved to reinterpret the original work with their sensitivity, adapting it to the sounds of the new millennium. In addition to the remastering of the two 1988 versions, BI NOSTALGIA conceived a deconstruction of the piece, linking some fragments in loops, creating an original adaptation.

The title of the piece has been freely inspired by Fleur Jaeggy's novel "The Water Statues" [Adelphi, 1980].

Exemplum Rhythmicus è la nuova ristampa di BI NOSTALGIA uscita oggi (originariamente pubblicato con il
nome dell'artista Luca Rigato con la Tape Label veronese
Diagrapho).
A lungo ambito e cercato dai collezionisti, è
tra i manufatti più strani e resistenti
della straordinaria scena musicale avant-garde italiana del
Anni '80. Un emblema della diversità sonora resa
attraverso il suono elettronico, distillando un
numero multiplo di tradizioni e citazioni.
Mentre molte delle avanguardie italiane di musica sperimentale hanno iniziato all'interno degli
spettri della musica popolare, che si stavano lentamente diffondendo
sempre più esplicitamente ambiziosi e stimolanti,
con il passare degli anni, BI NOSTALGIA rappresentava un
cambiamento nella marea direzionale.
Exemplum Rhythmicus faceva parte di un movimento
verso l'incorporazione di forme popolari all'interno
della musica d'avanguardia che ha attraversato il mondo
durante gli anni '80.
Tanto impegnativo e complesso quanto seducente e
invitante, Exemplum Rhythmicus tesse un mondo
senza confine, di collisione e armonia. Una visione
di possibili futuri resi nel suo presente. Un
regno melodico quasi interamente costruito
l'uso del sintetizzatore, con sottili interventi di
ritmo elettronico, pianoforte e strumenti a percussione.
Exemplum collega i territori metronomici
esplorato dai minimalisti americani e dalle esperte
armoniche coltivate di percussioni balinesi, con
lo spirito avventuroso delle avanguardie.

Exemplum Rhythmicus is Bi Nostalgia’s minimal
wonder from 1990 (originally released under the
artist’s name Luca Rigato on the Veronese cassette
label Diagrapho).
Long coveted and hunted by collectors, it falls
among the strange and definition resistant artefacts
of Italy’s remarkable avant-garde music scene of the
1980s. An emblem of sonic diversity rendered
through electronic sound, distilling a daunting
number of traditions and ideas, while sculpting its
own world of creative singularity, standing apart
from the rest.
While a great many of Italy’s avant-garde and
experimental music practitioners began within the
spectrums of popular music, slowly pushing into
more explicitly ambitious and challenging realms as
the years wore on, Bi Nostalgia represented a
change in the directional tide.
Exemplum Rhythmicus was part of a movement
towards the incorporation of popular forms within
avant-garde music which swept across the globe
during the 1980’s.
As challenging and complex as it is seductive and
inviting, Exemplum Rhythmicus weaves a world
without boundary, of collision and harmony. A vision
of possible futures rendered in its present day. A
melodic realm almost entirely constructed through
the use of synthesizer, with subtle interventions of
electronic rhythm, piano and bells.
Exemplum bridges the metronomic territories
explored by American minimalists and the highly
cultivated harmonics of Balinese percussion, with
the adventurous spirit of the avant-garde.

L'idea di una colonna sonora immaginaria per "Il Re in Giallo" era partita molti anni fa,
ai tempi dei primi nastri come Ah Nahm e degli Endless Nostalgia.
La raccolta di racconti di Robert W. Chambers è stata una delle mie letture preferite da sempre e la rileggo ogni tanto,
scoprendo sempre nuove sfumature.
Poi (come altre) l'idea è rimasta lì, in attesa di sedimentare ulteriormente.

Grazie al lavoro di ristampe curate da Stefano Gentile (per RE-TLOTG via Silentes, che ringrazio) dei nastri originali della League of the Gloomers,
ho seriamente preso in considerazione di riprendere alcuni progetti che non speravo di iniziare e terminare.

Dapprima, la ri-stampa privata di "UNO in Four Parts" in 4CDs (ultimo lavoro a nome BI NOSTALGIA, datato anno domini 2006),
con materiale che avevo registrato a cavallo tra il 2005 e il 2006, frutto di lunghe improvvisazioni e sperimentazioni dilatate.
Successivamente, è arrivato anche lo stimolo per registrare finalmente "King in Yellow", riprendere il filo con la musica e di dedicare un pò di tempo
alla creazione di nuove tessiture sonore dopo molti anni.
Da qualche tempo ho ripreso seriamente a pensare/progettare un nuovo disco di canzoni, diverso da quanto avevo fatto in passato.

Questo lavoro chiude idealmente una trilogia di musiche accompagnatrici alla lettura, nate con i romanzi di Yukio Mishima (The Seeping Mouth, 1985) e
con i pensieri solitari dei padri del deserto (Philiokalia, 1985-86).
Anche per questo, "King in Yellow" racchiude in sè passato e presente, mistero e fantasia.

Se in "The Seeping Mouth" suonavo e improvvisavo al ritmo del mio respiro (era stata registrata in una sola giornata) e
in "Philiokalia" ho scoperto le prime "pause" e silenzi musicali, leggendo i testi dei padri del deserto,
"King in Yellow" si muove tra paesaggi pre-autunnali e sussurri nell'ora del tramonto.

Registrato in parte a Malosco (provincia di Trento) dove i sentieri dei boschi hanno pienamente ispirato
passeggiate e idee, in piena rilettura estiva del "Re in Giallo", gran parte del materiale sonoro è stato abbozzato in montagna.
Per poi terminarne registrazioni e missaggi al Room Studio a fine estate.

ENDLESS NOSTALGIA, a short history

ENDLESS NOSTALGIA nasce a fine Aprile 1982 da un'idea di Luca Rigato (aka Bi Nostalgia) e Davide Cavallaro (aka David E.H.),
due musicisti veronesi provenienti dai circuiti industriale punk della zona. Dopo la partecipazione al 2° Festival Rock Italiano come
"Luke X's Ah Nahm Inc.", dove si qualificano alla finale di Bologna, i due lavorano alla loro prima uscita su cassetta.
Chiamano il loro minuscolo studio The Room e si chiudono dentro i loro sogni e il loro nuovo sound.
"Two days of light" contiene la prima produzione artistica e darà luce anche ad una tape label personale: The League of the Gloomers.
Il suono nel frattempo, si evolve rapidamente verso un mix tra facile pop ed estremismo artistico.
Il 1983 li vede trascurare i concerti per dedicarsi esclusivamente alla composizione e alla scrittura. Nasce così "Lost", un progetto multimediale che comprende un romanzo,
una dozzina di canzoni e uno spettacolo tra instant pop e installazione. 

Nel 1984 la seconda uscita in cassetta "Memories in Heaven", sfiora quasi
le mille copie distribuite e li imporrà alla critica specializzata nazionale con le prime proposte discografiche.

Trovano in terra fiorentina la patria ideale per i loro stimoli pop e sarà proprio Firenze ad assistere alla loro prima e unica uscita su vinile:
"Me & My Alter Ego" un 12" per l'allora neonata Anemic Music/IRA.
Nonostante una fortunata terza cassetta, l'ineccepibile "The Art of Nothing", il mix per l'IRA sarà la chiusura dell'attività come duo.
Da sempre alla ricerca di nuovi stimoli, Bi & David, abbandonano il sound elettronico nel momento di maggiore espansione per concretizzare
un nuovo sound elettrico, allargando la formazione a cinque elementi con Emilio Pizzoccoli alla batteria e Paolo Tosetto alle tastiere oltre
che al fido chitarrista Carlo Carugi.
Nel 1985 nascono i nuovi ENDLESS NOSTALGIA, che dedicheranno
il resto dell'anno a concerti e alla composizione di nuove canzoni, ampliando ulteriormente la formazione con l'aggiunta di un nuovo chitarrista,
Flavio Florio.
Dopo un anno trascorso tra sala prove e palchi in giro per lo stivale, registrano due nuovi tapes che documentano questa ulteriore
metamorfosi, il primo è praticamente una summa registrata in diretta "Live 1985", con nuovi arrangiamenti di brani più conosciuti.
Il secondo, "Veenoobra" spiazza completamente i vecchi fan ed aggiungendone di nuovi, dove la parte elettrica è predominante.
Il repertorio live elettrico è potente ma non troverà riscontro tra i discografici. Anche i concerti si fermano a fine del 1986.
Gli ENDLESS NOSTALGIA in formazione originale, torneranno solamente tra il 1989 e il 1992 con compilations e cassingles
che sfoceranno in "D.I.Y. Home Music Dictionary", ultimo lavoro pubblicato (ripubblicato come "Small Domestic Tunes" nel 2018).

Nel 2012, su stimolo di Stefano Gentile e dell'etichetta Silentes/Oltrelanebbiailmare, viene pubblicata in doppio CD una raccolta
dal titolo "HomeMade Gloomy Pop" che riunisce quanto di meglio sviluppato dai due.
Tra il 2016 e il 2018 verrano ristampate da Silentes/re-TLOTG, tutte le registrazioni delle cassette originale, corredate da bonus tracks e outtakes.
La parte sonora originale del progetto "Lost" vedrà la luce solo nel 2017, come bonus disc nella ristampa in CD di "Memories in Heaven".
